McGrath refuses to back Norris

A blow has been dealt to David Norris' presidential hopes tonight as it was confirmed that Independent TD Mattie McGrath will not be supporting him.

The Tipperary South Deputy met with 71 of his supporters this evening to discuss whether of not to back the Senator.

A motion to support David Norris was defeated by 53 votes to 18.

It means that the Senator is still two signatures shy of the 20 needed to get on the ballot paper.

He will now have to go back to those who have previously refused to support him, or rely on getting the support of 4 councils next week.
