A woman has drowned at an unguarded beach in Co Clare.

The 35-year-old was swept out to sea near Liscannor yesterday.

Meanwhile, an Irish holidaymaker died in front of his wife and parents during an Algarve boat trip on Sunday.

The 36-year-old man jumped into the water near the popular resort of Albufeira. Witnesses told police he disappeared underwater, before emerging a few moments later, floating apparently lifelessly on the surface.

Efforts were made to resuscitate him, but they were unsuccessful.
