An earthquake shook the border area between Greece and Albania earlier today, but there were no reports of damage or injuries.

The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 and struck at 4.26am (2.26am Irish time), the Athens Geodynamic Institute said.

The epicentre was about 50 miles north of the Greek city of Ioannina, on the other side of the border and inside Albania.

An earthquake of a magnitude between 2.5 and 3 is the smallest generally felt by people.

A quake of magnitude 4 to 5 can cause moderate damage in populated areas.
