De Rossa to take part in EU monitoring of Palestine election

Labour Party MEP Proinsias de Rossa is due to travel to Palestine this week as an EU observer for the January 9 presidential election.

Labour Party MEP Proinsias de Rossa is due to travel to Palestine this week as an EU observer for the January 9 presidential election.

Mr de Rossa is part of a 30-strong mission being sent by the European Parliament to monitor the vote to select a replacement for Yasser Arafat, who died late last year.

The delegation is due to meet candidates and election officials in the coming days before returning to Europe on January 10.

It will also monitor voting in the five key areas of Gaza, East Jerusalem, Hebron, Nablus/Jenin and Ramallah.
