Sunderland’s record signing Asamoah Gyan has to be content with a place on the bench at Wigan this afternoon.
Gyan, a £13m-plus recruit from Rennes on transfer deadline day, will have to wait for his full debut with Danny Welbeck coming into the starting line-up in place of Fraizer Campbell, who sustained cruciate ligament damage in the victory over Manchester City.
Nedum Onuoha returns to the defence having been ineligible to face City, his parent club, in the only other change to Steve Bruce’s team.
Wigan boss Roberto Martinez has kept faith in the side that had won at Tottenham, with deadline day loan capture Tom Cleverley and fellow new arrival Franco Di Santo both on the bench.
Charles N’Zogbia, left out of the squad to face Spurs following the breakdown of his proposed move to Birmingham, is also included amongst the Latics’ substitutes, along with goalkeeper Chris Kirkland, another absentee from the trip to White Hart Lane.
