Liverpool defender Steve Finnan has withdrawn from the Irish squad for this weekend's Euro 2008 qualifier against Slovakia.

The full-back had been receiving treatment on a knee problem in Liverpool and his absence leaves manager Steve Staunton with a defensive headache as Stephen Carr is also out through injury.

Staunton says he will continue to monitor the situation is hopeful that Finnan may be fit for next Wednesday's clash with the Czech Republic in Prague.

Meanwhile, Paul McShane is hoping to shake off a shoulder injury in time for Saturday's game, but it is unclear if he will resume full contact training with the rest of the squad in Malahide this morning.
