Gardaí tonight released a 32-year old man without charge after questioning him about a gangland murder.

The man was driving the Ford Mondeo which was sprayed with bullets outside the Yacht pub on the Clontarf Road.

He escaped by running to a nearby house but his 27-year-old passenger, Noel Roche, was killed in the attack, which happened around 9.30pm on Tuesday.

A Garda spokeswoman said the man had been released from Raheny garda station at 3.45pm without charge.

Detectives were granted an additional 24 hours to question the man under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act at Dublin District Court yesterday.

The court was told that in nearly 11 hours of questioning, the detainee had refused to answer a single question.

The man, who was arrested by detectives in Dublin’s city centre on Friday, had to be either released or charged by 4pm today.

The murder of Mr Roche, 27, was believed to be a reprisal for the shooting of Darren Geoghegan and Gavin Byrne in the Firhouse area of the city last Sunday night.

Mr Roche’s brother, John, was shot dead in Kilmainham last March as part of a five-year feud between two rival gangs that has now claimed eight lives.
