Ahern to appear before bombings inquiry

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, is due to give evidence today to the Oireachtas committee investigating the 1974 Dublin and Monaghan bombings.

The Justice Committee is investigating whether a public inquiry into the atrocity is warranted following the publication of the Barron Report last year.

That report concluded that there was no evidence of official collusion in the bombings, which killed 33 people on May 17, 1974.

Mr Ahern is expected to tell the Justice Committee today about his Government’s efforts to get files on the matter from the British authorities.

Meanwhile, retired Canadian judge Peter Cory is due to give evidence to the Justice Committee next week.

Mr Cory recently investigated allegations of official collusion in six controversial murders in the North during the 1980s and 1990s.

The Justice Committee is expected to question him about the methods he used to compile these reports.

The committee is due to conclude its investigation into the Dublin and Monaghan attacks on Wednesday and present its recommendations to the Government before March 10.
