Take Turpin for victory

Nicky Richards has taken the easier option of the Edward Hanmer Memorial Graduation Chase at Haydock for Turpin Green and his decision can pay dividends.

Nicky Richards has taken the easier option of the Edward Hanmer Memorial Graduation Chase at Haydock for Turpin Green and his decision can pay dividends.

Richards had given last year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup third an entry in the Grade One Lexus Chase at Leopardstown but the prospect of taking on the likes of Denman did not really appeal.

This looks a much more realistic target for him as he is favourably treated by the conditions.

If this were a handicap he would be giving stacks of weight away to most of his rivals and Richards should be applauded for spotting the opportunity.

As well as his third at the Festival, Turpin Green beat Exotic Dancer at Carlisle early last season.

He can throw in the odd shocker but despite being beaten a long way in the Betfair Chase on his seasonal reappearance, his class should tell.

Sharp Belline looks a likely winner for trainer Sue Smith in The Last Fling Chase.

The race commemorates one of Smith’s former stable stars and she will doubtless be keen to bag the prize once again.

Sharp Belline won a similar race at the course last year and looks favourably treated to repeat the trick.

Pertinent can make amends for falling last time out in the Totesport.com Novices’ Hurdle at Taunton.

Paul Nicholls’ charge was a winner in his native France and he put up a bold show on his British bow at Chepstow, looking to have second place in the bag before crashing out at the second last.

Providing his confidence has not been affected, Pertinent should surely get off the mark.

One More Round can give fledgling trainer Ollie Pears a welcome winner in the Pontin’s Book Early And Save Claiming Stakes at Lingfield.

Formerly with Nick Littmoden, the nine-year-old is obviously not improving but in this sort of level is still very competitive.

He contested big handicap sprints such as the Ayr Gold Cup and Stewards Cup in the past and showed enough dash to win at Haydock in September.

He was picked up for 8,000 guineas at the sales and sent to Pears, who has one winner from 11 runners to his name as a trainer.

One More Round finished runner-up at this level on his only start for the yard to date and looks a likely type to strike here.
