Crash victim's mother 'grateful our son is alive'

“We are the lucky ones but we are praying for those who are not so fortunate.”

“We are the lucky ones but we are praying for those who are not so fortunate.”

Those were the words of the mother of Glanmire man Peter Cowley, who was one of the six survivors of yesterday’s plane crash at Cork Airport.

The 31-year-old, who has lived in Glanmire all his life, received a number of injuries including a punctured lung, a broken collarbone and a broken wrist, in the crash that claimed the lives of six people.

He came out of intensive care at Cork University Hospital today.

His father Peter is well-known in golfing circles, having represented Ireland at senior level.

Mr Cowley’s mother Anne said that even though her son received serious injuries, he would recover: “He has a lot of broken bones but thankfully there is nothing that can’t be mended.

“We are the lucky ones but we are thinking about the those who were not so fortunate.

“Our prayers and thoughts go out to them.”

Meanwhile, Kinsale mum-of-two Heather Elliott is expected to make a full recovery after miraculously only suffering minor injuries in the crash.

The 42-year-old, whose maiden name is Peare, is a nurse working in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. She has lived in Belfast for many years but regularly returns to Cork to visit her mother and brother who live in Kinsale.

Canon David Williams of St Multose Rectory said he visited Heather in hospital and said she was in remarkably good spirits despite the terrible ordeal she had been through.

Investigators recovered the two black box recording devices late last night from the wreckage.

They contain critical in-flight data as well as a recording of the conversation taking place in the cockpit prior to the crash.
