We're ready for key clash - Kerr

Republic of Ireland manager Brian Kerr is confident the importance of Saturday’s World Cup qualifier against Israel is not lost on his players.

Republic of Ireland manager Brian Kerr is confident the importance of Saturday’s World Cup qualifier against Israel is not lost on his players.

Group Four leaders Ireland have the opportunity to take a giant stride in the campaign to qualify for next summer’s finals in Germany.

Kerr’s side top the group on goal difference from France and Israel, while Switzerland are three points adrift in fourth, but with a game in hand.

A victory for Ireland at the Ramat-Gan Stadium, and a Swiss win against France in Paris the same night would give the Republic a three-point cushion at the midway point.

That could prove crucial as Ireland are without a competitive game next week - instead playing a Lansdowne Road friendly against China – while Israel host France in Tel Aviv on Wednesday, with the Swiss at home to Cyprus.

“There’s no doubt there are four of us still in it,” reflected Kerr.

“The other two [Cyprus and the Faroe Islands] may improve and garner some points. They could still have a part to play if they take points off any of the current top four.

“As to what will give teams the edge for the rest of the campaign? Getting the most points out of the games they have left is the obvious answer.

“But being able to get results away usually makes the difference in a qualification group at any level because teams are expected to win their home games.

“So I’m happy with the shape we are in and that the players have a grasp of the task ahead and are aware of the strengths and weaknesses of Israel.

“Even though we’ve only had a short time together, they are clued up and understand this is a big match.”

Kerr also feels his group of players are slowly developing and maturing as they gain in experience at all levels, and that may give Ireland the edge against an Israel side mainly comprising home-based players.

“A lot of the team are beginning to emerge,” added Kerr.

“Damien Duff is playing in the Champions League for the first time, while the three Newcastle lads – Shay Given, Andy O’Brien and Stephen Carr – are all playing in Europe this season.

“It’s good for them and for us that they are playing against some of the best teams in Europe, as well as regularly in the Premiership.

“It has to be good for our team because as I’ve said before, it’s important the players are playing at a good level, and if they can play at a higher level then there’s benefits.

“In recent times the majority of our players have been doing well and have been there or thereabouts in the first team.

“Not all of them are playing or are first choice every week, but then there’s not many who are fringe players, but they are playing a lot of games and that can only help us.”
