The Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore has rejected an accusation of manipulating the EU Budget negotiations.
Mr Gilmore and the European Parliament’s chief negotiator Alain Lamassoure agreed on a joint text on the Multi-annual Financial Framework in Brussels on Wednesday evening.
However, MEPs from across the political spectrum have now indicated their dissatisfaction with the terms of the deal.
German MEP Reimer Boge resigned from his position as negotiator for the European People’s Party in protest.
Fianna Fail's spokesperson on European Affairs, Deputy Timmy Dooley, said it is damaging to Ireland's image abroad.
He said: "It's very damaging because the EPP is one of the biggest groups within the European Parliament, and for the negotiator to feel that his only option is to resign from the process speaks volumes.
"The fact that he is a German MEP just adds to the upset and the confusion that will be felt right around Europe."
