Union leaders' salaries revealed
A survey of Ireland's main trade unions has reportedly found that their leaders are paid salaries of up to €172,000.
The Irish Times says it approached 16 unions seeking details of the pay earned by their general secretaries, but seven refused to disclose the figures.
Of the other nine, the Irish National Teachers Organisation and IMPACT were both found to be paying their leaders the highest salaries.
INTO general secretary John Carr gets €172,000, while IMPACT's Peter McLoone earns more than €171,000.
Elsewhere, ASTI general secretary John White receives €144,000 and the TUI pays Peter McMenamin between €132,000 and €150,000.
The three national executive officers of SIPTU each earned almost €125,000 last year, while ICTU general secretary David Begg is paid more than €137,000 per year by Congress.
The unions that refused to disclose pay details include the Irish Nurses Organisation, the TEEU, Mandate and the Irish Bank Officials Association.
The employers' body IBEC, which has been to the forefront in demanding cuts in public-sector pay and social welfare rates, also refused to disclose how much it pays its director general, Danny McCoy.
