Independent Senator David Norris will make a final effort to relaunch his presidential election bid later today.

He is to address a meeting of Senators at around midday in a final push to persuade them to help him secure a nomination.

He needs the backing of 20 Oireachtas members to get on the ballot paper.

He dramatically withdrew from the race a month ago after it emerged he wrote to the Israeli authorities seeking clemency for his former lover who was convicted of the statutory rape of a 15-year-old boy.

Mr Norris is scheduled to appear on 'The Late Late Show' tomorrow night where it is likely he will make his position known.
