Sinn Féin deputies were infuriated when the Tánaiste said there was a history of paedophilia within the Republican movement.

The remarks provoked outcry from the Sinn Féin benches. The party has lodged a complaint to the Committee on Procedures and Privileges.

Mary Lou McDonald said the Tánaiste’s comments were a "slur" and that Sinn Féin would not accept a repeat.

"The Tánaiste needs to understand that if she slurs me (or) my colleagues in that manner, she will be challenged on it," she said

"If the rules are not applied and if she does not conduct herself in a way that does not attack our characters, we're in for more disruption."

Speaking to Morning Ireland today, party president Gerry Adams said the disruption had been caused by Ceann Comhairle Sean Barrett, and that the two men were due to meet to discuss yesterday's events.

Mr Adams said however, that he did not have confidence in the Ceann Comhairle.
