Armed gardaí discharged a shot at a car in Co Louth last night after the vehicle rammed a patrol car.

Two men were arrested following the incident in the Omeath area at around midnight last night.

As part of Operation Anvil - which was set up to tackle organised crime - gardaí had been attempting to stop the car before it rammed a patrol car. A garda discharged one shot at the vehicle.

There are no reports of injuries.

It is understood that at least one of the two men in the car was armed. One of them was arrested at the scene while the other man was apprehended a short distance away.

The two men - each of whom is in his 20s - are being detained under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act at Dundalk garda station.

A technical examination of the scene is underway

Gardaí are appealing to anyone with information about the incident to contact them.
