A senior Garda from Cork whose cancer was misdiagnosed has passed away.

51-year-old Superintendent Martin Dorney from Waterfall near Ballincollig had been battling skin cancer for the past number of years.

Last year he made a complaint to the Medical Council over the failure of his GP, Dr Pat Lee from Ballincollig to send him for further investigative surgery after he developed a mole.

At the Medical Council Fitness to Practice Inquiry, Dr Lee admitted to only skimming a report from Cork University Hospital that recommended Mr Dorney have a further procedure.

Dr Lee was suspended for three months.

Mr Dorney would have had a 95% chance of survival if he had been sent for further tests in 2003.

He passed away this morning and is survived by his wife Pauline and his three children.
