Gardaí are warning motorists who continue to drive while under the influence of alcohol that they will remain a priority target during the coming months.

The latest Garda figures show that 318 people were arrested for drink-driving between Christmas Day and New Year's Eve.

The figure is down slightly on the 342 arrested over the preceding seven-day period.

The level of drink-driving arrests has increased significantly since gardaí were given the power to conduct random breath tests last year.
