Mr Coveney was speaking during a visit to Kyiv on Thursday. He was visiting areas in the Ukrainian capital directly affected by the Russian invasion, and meeting Ukraine’s foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba and defence minister Oleksii Reznikov.

Speaking during a press conference with Mr Kuleba, Mr Coveney said it was a privilege to be with him and said he brought a strong message of solidarity from the Government and people.

At home, protesters in Dublin called on the Government to ban symbols of support for the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Minister for the Environment Eamon Ryan has rejected claims that a ban on the sale of turf has been paused.

It comes hours after Tánaiste Leo Varadkar told the Fine Gael parliamentary party that the ban has been put on hold because of rising energy prices.

The proposed ban on the commercial sale of turf is due to come into force in September, however question marks now hang over the timeline.

Mr Ryan said part of the Government’s climate plan is to tackle air quality issues and accused previous governments of “fudging” the issues.
