Shamrock Rovers have taken a big step towards retaining their Airtricity League of Ireland title with a 5-0 win over Drogheda United.

While Drogheda has proved uncomfortable opponents in the past, Stephen Bradley's side got off to a quick start, as they went 2-0 in front with goals from Trevor Clarke and Richard Towell after 15 minutes.

They scored their third just before half-time through Johnny Kenny, in what was a dominant first half performance.

They kept up the pressure in the second half, as further goals from Neil Farrugia and Markus Poom rounded off a comfortable night.

The victory puts them closer to their fourth league title in a row, as they face St Patrick's Athletic on Friday night, with a win securing the title.

At the other end of the table, Cork City kept their hopes alive of moving out of the relegation play-off sport with a 2-0 win over UCD.

Goals from Joe O'Brien Whitmarsh and Ruairi Keating leaves them six points behind Sligo Rovers in eight place, who travel to St Pat's tomorrow.
