Cork farmers block ESB efforts to install pylons

The ESB is to go to court seeking a High Court injunction to prevent two west Cork farmers blocking the installation of pylons on their land.

The ESB is to go to court seeking a High Court injunction to prevent two west Cork farmers blocking the installation of pylons on their land.

The farmers are among 26 landowners who want the lines to run underground, insisting the pylons pose health risks.

They have been blocking ESB access to their land for the last 10 days.

The ESB wants to erect the pylons to connect to a windfarm near Bantry.

Joe Burke, chairman of the group, said: “The way we’re being treated here is like dirt – we don’t own our land, the way the ESB talks.

“The ESB said: 'We have powers to come through you (your land) and through you (your land) we're gonna go!’

“The group has gotten so cross that if there was a million a day put up, they don’t care. It’s not about money anymore,” he said.
