A South African man was being questioned by drugs squad officers today after 15 kilos of herbal cannabis was seized.
The 53-year-old was arrested after the drugs, worth around €150,000, were recovered in Dundalk last night.
The man had travelled to the Co Louth town after arriving in Dublin Airport on a flight from Johannesburg via Amsterdam.
The arrest followed an investigation into drug smuggling in the area involving Revenue Customs Officers from Dundalk, Dublin Airport and the Dundalk Garda drugs unit.
The man was being questioned under section two of the Criminal Justice Act 1996 at Dundalk garda station.
He was arrested in Dundalk at around 10pm last night.
Gardaí later revealed the seizure was part of a planned operation targeting a Nigerian drug trafficking ring.
It is understood the smuggling gang had been operating across the country.
