Bruce: Savage stays at St Andrews

Birmingham manager Steve Bruce has insisted he is as determined as ever to keep midfielder Robbie Savage at St Andrews.

Birmingham manager Steve Bruce has insisted he is as determined as ever to keep midfielder Robbie Savage at St Andrews.

Blackburn are expected to make an improved bid of £2.7m (€3.8m) for the Wales international this week.

However Bruce knows the importance of Savage to the Blues and does not want to sell him to a potential rival.

He said: “Nothing has changed one little bit on Savage. I reiterate – Robbie is not for sale.

“I don’t want to sell him. He has been the heartbeat of the team for two and a half years and has epitomised what we are all about since we came into the Premiership.

“He has been vital to Birmingham. Do I really want to sell him to a rival at this juncture? I don’t think so.”

He added: “Blackburn made their offer which we rejected and they haven’t upped it.”

Bruce is understood to be keen on Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton and another potential target is Bolton’s Kevin Nolan.
