Percy team calm before Guineas D-day

Marcus Tregoning is not concerned about the preliminaries upsetting his star colt Sir Percy in the Stan James 2000 Guineas at Newmarket tomorrow.

Marcus Tregoning is not concerned about the preliminaries upsetting his star colt Sir Percy in the Stan James 2000 Guineas at Newmarket tomorrow.

The son of Mark Of Esteem has a habit of getting on his toes before his races but the Lambourn handler is confident the unbeaten three-year-old will handle the big-race build-up.

He was last seen beating the Aidan O’Brien-trained Horatio Nelson, who reopposes, in the Dewhurst Stakes and the trainer has reported everything in order ahead of his attempt to maintain his 100% record.

“I’m not worried about the preliminaries,” said Tregoning.

“They are not actually having a parade as such tomorrow. They are going to let them go at set intervals so it won’t be too bad.

“He gets on his toes, that’s his way. He was like that before the Dewhurst and it didn’t worry us.

“A lot of the speed is maybe on the far side but it’s not as though there are hundreds of runners and there are not many no-hopers in there.

“Everything’s fine, there’s nothing more to do. He’s in good form so we are hoping for the best. Everybody’s happy after his last piece of work”

Joint third-favourite in some lists is the Kevin Ryan-trained Amadeus Wolf, who will be the Hambleton trainer’s first runner in a Classic.

The colt won the Middle Park Stakes last season over six furlongs and Ryan is hopeful his charge can see out the extra distance on his first attempt over a mile.

“I’m optimistic he’ll get the trip,” said Ryan.

“The horse is in great form. The draw (12) is fine and he’ll have no problems with the ground.

“He’s done great over the winter and he’s had a good preparation.

“It’s nice to a have a runner in the Classics.”

And for stable jockey Neil Callan, the race cannot come soon enough.

“It really is a big day for everyone at the yard and we are all excited and looking forward to it,” said Callan.

“I think he’s improved from two to three but he hasn’t really grown much. He never was a big horse but I feel like he has matured.

“He’s definitely improved for me. He’s a much better horse this year.

“If you look at his pedigree he should have no trouble staying the mile. Sir Percy is by Mark Of Esteem and our fella has Mark Of Esteem on the dam’s side.

“The thing I like about him is that he is relaxed. He’s so grown up now and he can switch off really well. He galloped at Newmarket the other day and he really switched off,” Callan told At The Races.

“It’s always been Kevin’s plan to go without a run and we thought that we may as well find out if he stays the mile on the big stage – there was no point getting disappointed before then if he doesn’t stay.”

Sir Michael Stoute has won the 2000 Guineas five times in the past, most recently with Golan in 2001, and he will be represented by Final Verse in this year’s renewal.

And despite odds of 50-1, Bruce Raymond, racing manager to owner Saeed Suhail, thinks he could surprise a few people.

“He breezed yesterday morning and he’s looking in good shape,” said Raymond.

“He’s got a good draw and we are very pleased with him. He’s progressing and he’s a better horse than his price.”

Another man with a successful record in the race is Saeed bin Suroor, who won with his first runner in the race, Mark Of Esteem in 1996.

And despite the disappointment of Dubawi 12 months ago, the Godolphin operation are confident of a big run from their new purchase Opera Cape, who ran with great credit for Slyvester Kirk last year.

“Opera Cape is in good form. He worked very well earlier this week over six furlongs with Belenus – Frankie Dettori rode him,” bin Suroor told www.godolphin.com.

“He is ready to run, having been prepared in Dubai. It is a tough race but we are looking forward to a good performance from him.”
