Murray tries to build on Wimbledon

Andy Murray will today bid to build on his promising run to the third round at Wimbledon when taking on Francis Gregory Carraz in the first round of the ATP Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport, Rhode Island.

The 18-year-old Scot was the top-performing Briton at the All England Club, his winning streak coming to an end when Argentinian David Nalbandian fought back from two sets down to win a marathon match on Centre Court.

Murray has soared 99 places in the new world rankings and now stands 213th in the ATP’s entry system, by which placings are determined on a rolling 12-month basis.

That makes him the British number six, but in his sights will be the three players directly above him – Jamie Delgado (209th), Arvind Parmar (200th) and Alex Bogdanovic (189th).

Murray could overtake that trio in the next seven days, should he perform strongly at the Rhode Island grass-court event this week.

Murray’s first-round draw against Carraz is distinctly favourable, with his 30-year-old opponent having won just three of his 10 matches on the main tour this year, and they will be first on Centre Court at around 4pm Irish time.

Defending champion Greg Rusedski, who could meet Murray in the quarter-finals, will be in action overnight in the final match on Centre Court against Italy’s Uros Vico.
