Figures released by the Energy Regulator today show that the number of gas and electricity customers being disconnected are down almost 30% on last year.
An average of 1,300 domestic gas and electricity customers continue to be disconnected every month in the first half of 2011, however.
In its latest disconnections report, the Energy Regulator says that 7,705 electricity customers were disconnected to the end of June - a 7.4% decrease compared to the same time last year.
Disconnections in the gas market were down 45%, from nearly 4,000 in the first six months of 2010 to just more than 2,000 for the first six months of this year.
The energy regulator says disconnections should only be a last resort.
The regulator is set to name the suppliers along with the number of customers they have cut off in its next report due in September.
