Man charged with criminal damage to Monet painting
A 47-year-old man has been charged with criminal damage to a Monet painting in the National Gallery of Ireland.
Andrew Shannon of Willans' Way, Clonsilla is alleged to have put a large hole in the 1874 artwork, Argenteuil Basin with a Single Sailboat, late last Friday morning.
The criminal charge does not put a value on the damage done to the impressionist oil painting, the only Monet piece in the National Gallery's collection, but it is believed to be insured for up to €7m.
Mr Shannon was not in court as details were given of his arrest, charge and caution.
Judge Cormac Dunne heard he complained of chest pains yesterday evening and was brought to St James's Hospital where he is under the care of a cardiologist.
