The Malton handler stayed at home as his 16-1 shot scythed through the pack to take the £42,765 first prize.

What the five-year-old lacked in experience he more than made up in guts as he led close home in a bunch finish to see off French Saulaie by a length and a half.

Orpen Wide was a short head away in third with The Duke’s Speech another short head back in fourth.

Winning rider Dougie Costello, who needs just one more success to lose his 3lb claim, said: “I knew Charlie Swan’s horse (Emmpat) was in front of me and he’d won his last two races, but had gone up 21lb since he beat my horse at Fairyhouse when nothing went right for us.

“I felt if I could just track him and stay with him up to the long run-in, he would have a chance and the loose horse helped him too.”

The last hurdle was omitted as Wayne Kavanagh was receiving attention after a crashing fall from Kawagino on the first circuit. He was relatively unscathed and hopes to ride at Plumpton tomorrow.

Tom Greenway was taken to hospital after taking a terrible tumble on Sunday City at the fifth flight.

He was concussed but conscious and taken to Whiston Hospital, near Warrington, for observation.

In the other jump race on a mixed card, Abragante pipped Chilling Place by a neck in the Betfredcasino Long Distance Handicap Hurdle.

There was little to choose between them over the final flight but David Pipe’s 7-1 chance, ridden by Timmy Murphy, got his head in front where it mattered to win by a neck.

The winner’s stablemate Tamarinbleu was two and a half lengths away in third.

Pipe said: “It was a good performance and the blinkers have helped him again. It probably wasn’t the greatest race he won last time but he was put up 15lb and this race was better than that.

“I wasn’t quite sure he was going to go through with it at the end but Timmy’s given him a great ride and he’s done it nicely.”

Munaddam, refreshed following a successful winter campaign in Dubai, ran out a smooth winner of the Betfredpoker Spring Trophy.

Royston Ffrench had the Ed Dunlop-trained five-year-old handy on the heels of the early leader Levera before unleashing him with a telling burst a furlong out.

The 11-2 shot swept home by a length and a quarter from Excusez Moi with the unlucky-in-running Mac Love a length and three-quarters back in third.

“He’s entered in the Golden Jubilee and the King’s Stand at Royal Ascot, but he gets the seven well and he might get a mile,” said Dunlop’s assistant Matt Cumani.

“He had a bit of a break when he came back from Dubai about a month ago. He loved it out there – the sun and the training regime.”

Winning owner Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum completed a brace with the Michael Jarvis-trained Makshoof (6-1) in the Betfred “The Bonus King” Handicap.

His jockey George Baker completed a 20-1 double on 2-1 joint-favourite Mad Rush in the Betfred Over 660 Shops Nationwide Maiden Stakes.

The lightly-raced three-year-old colt came home three and a half lengths clear of Coastal Command.

Winning trainer Luca Cumani said: “He was a bit green early on and was a bit unsure what to do. Once George showed him some daylight he did it well.

“We’ll take him home, see what the handicapper does and have a look at some decent handicaps.”

Sierra Vista may make a quick reappearance in a five-furlong handicap at York on Thursday after showing plenty of dash to win the Text ’Betfred’ To 83080 For Mobile Betting Conditions Stakes.

The seven-year-old mare put up a good performance to hold Borderlescott by half a length with Fonthill Road a head away in third.

“She’s amazing. When I saddled her up you could tell she just loves it here,” said trainer David Barker.

“She gets a penalty for the Epsom Dash and she looked badly handicapped beforehand and she was fourth in it last year from a bad draw. I wish she could win a Listed race and on this form she probably can.

“If she’s all right she could turn out again at York next week.”

However, there was a sting in the tail for jockey Tom Eaves, who was banned for three days (May 24-26) for using his whip with excessive force and frequency.

National Hunt rider Noel Fehily took the honours on the Tim Easterby-trained Harvest Warrior in the Betfredcasino Flat v Jump Jockeys Handicap.

Fehily brought the 9-1 shot with a well-timed run to win by a length and three-quarters from Azreme.

“I was in a pocket turning in but I switched wide and he picked up nicely,” said Fehily.
