A 50-year-old man accused of murdering of his wife in their south Dublin home almost two years ago will go on trial today.

The state will open its case against Brian Kearney, who has denied killing Siobhan Kearney on February 28, 2006.

The trial at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin is expected to last up to five weeks.

The 38-year-old's body was discovered by a relative locked in an upstairs bedroom of their home at Carnroe, Knocknashee, Goatstown. The mother-of-one had been strangled to death with a vacuum cleaner flex.

The couple's young son, now aged five, was in the house when her body was found.

Mrs Kearney, a chef, ran a small hotel in Majorca with her husband and spent her time between Ireland and Spain.

On Monday, trial judge Mr Justice Barry White adjourned proceedings to begin today after an issue arose with the book of evidence.

The jury of seven men and five women have been warned that the case has attracted a great deal of attention in the press, and that they must try it solely and exclusively on the evidence presented in court.

Denis Vaughan Buckley SC is presenting the case for the prosecution, with Patrick Gageby SC representing Kearney.
