Thousands of US soldiers have apparently already passed through Shannon airport after the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, said the US Army can use Irish airports in its so-called "war against terrorism".

The soldiers are understood to have travelled through Ireland on commercial airliners chartered by the US Government.

Since last Thursday, eight airliners, each with 300 soldiers on board, have passed through Shannon, but some of them are understood to have been returning from the Persian Gulf.
