A German tourist has been killed and a second was missing tonight after a boating accident in Co Fermanagh.

They were on a cruiser which ran aground on the small Cleenishgarve Island in Lower Lough Erne close to Castlearchdale, said the RUC.

A day long search was carried out on the lough for the missing man, with local boat owners joining a helicopter, RNLI inshore lifeboat and police boat.

By tonight, hopes faded that the missing person would be found alive.

The tourists had taken over the cruiser from a local boat yard late on Saturday at the start of their holiday and the vessel was found overturned this morning.

It is understood that they had plenty of experience on the lough, having hired a cruiser there every year since 1988.

The RUC contacted Interpol and the German authorities to inform the men’s families.
