Child abuse victims to receive compensation

The Minister for Education is to publish legislation today to provide compensation to people who were abused as children while in residential care.

The Minister for Education is to publish legislation today to provide compensation to people who were abused as children while in residential care.

Under the Residential Institutions Redress Bill, applications will be heard for three years from victims of abuse.

After that period, only exceptional cases will be considered.

Applicants will give evidence in either oral or written form to the board for consideration, and those awarded damages will have to sign a waiver of any actions against the State or any public body.
