British mobile phone giant, Vodafone, is expected to formally announce its takeover of Eircell when the stock exchange opens for business today.

A majority of shareholders have given their backing to the deal.

The passing of a merger to demerge Eircell from Eircom at the company's EGM on Friday cleared the way for Vodafone's takeover to take place.

The counting of ballots in the British mobile giant's bid closed last night with over 99.5% of shareholders backing the deal.

From today shareholders will hold shares in both companies.

The value per share is still likely to be less than the 3.9 Euros paid per share when Eircom was floated on the stock exchange.
