Tyrone won their 11th Ulster SFC title with a battling win over courageous Monaghan at Clones.

The Red Hands made a storming start, but in the end, were relieved to survive in the face of a furious Farney onslaught.

An early goal from wing back Philip Jordan gave them the platform and a six points lead, before Monaghan appearing in their first final in 19 years, finally started to perform.

Paul Finlay steered over a 30 metre free and Ciaran Hanratty cut inside Ryan McMenamin to loft the ball between the posts.

Rory Woods added another, and a sweeping move involving Tommy Freeman and Gologly ended with Finlay nailing on another point from a tight angle.

Now just three points separated the sides at 1-6 to 0-6, but Tyrone stepped on the gas once again for Davy Harte to take from Joe McMahon and power over an excellent score, before McCullagh brought his tally to four with another free.

Tommy Freeman was never able to escape the tenacious Conor Gormley, while Hanratty was only in the game in flashes, thanks to the attentions of McMenamin.

Finlay pulled another point back from a placed ball, and at the break, Tyrone led by 1-8 to 0-7.

McEnaney needed a target man, and he turned to full-back Vincent Corey, pushing him up to full-forward, sending Finlay further outfield to supply the ammunition.

The move was an unqualified success, Corey’s strength and ball-winning ability causing all sorts of problems for the Red Hand defence.

He set up a goal for Tommy Freeman, and would have had one himself but for a brilliant point-blank save from John Devine.

But first, Tyrone played themselves into a match-winning position by stretching their lead to eight points in the opening 10 minutes of the second half.

Corner back Dermot Carlin pressed forward to split the posts, McCullagh stroked over another free, Gerard Cavlan also scored before being forced to retire with hamstring trouble, and Cavanagh ripped through the Monaghan defence to tag on two.

At 1-13 to 0-8, the game could have been over by that stage, but Monaghan pride and passion saw to it that there would be more twists and turns before the final whistle.

In the final 20 minutes they outscored their opponents by 1-5 to 0-2, laying siege to the Tyrone goal with good old-fashioned route one football.

Finlay’s cultured left boot sent a series of accurate missiles raining down on Corey, and in the 51st minute he struck paydirt, fielding to send Tommy Freeman in for a goal, finished coolly past Devine and into the bottom corner of the net.

Freeman was finally getting some joy up front, thanks chiefly to the presence of Corey, and he tagged on a couple of points, with Finlay also on target.

Corey could have had a goal when he took Freeman’s pass, but Devine was this time equal to the task, spreading his body to save, when a goal would have brought the sides level in the final minute of normal time.

Cavanagh and Mulligan lifted the siege with points, but Monaghan were soon back on the offensive.

Stoppage time points from Finlay and Corey, blasted over with another chance of a goal, were just not enough to apply a fairytale finish, and Tyrone held out for a place in the quarter-finals.
