Burren and Clonmacnoise should be world heritage sites: Gormley

The Burren, the Céide Fields and Clonmacnoise are among the sites that Environment Minister John Gormley believes should be on the World Heritage List.

The Burren, the Céide Fields and Clonmacnoise are among the sites that Environment Minister John Gormley believes should be on the World Heritage List.

Minister Gormely has submitted a list of sites to UNESCO for consideration.

The sites on Minister Gormely's list includes the Burren in Co Clare, the Céide Fields and North West Mayo boglands and Clonmacnoise and its monastic surrounds.

Also on the list is the "historic city of Dublin" and the royal sites of Ireland which include Cashel, the Hill of Uisneach and Rathcroghan complex.

The Western Stone Forts and the Early Medieval Monastic Sites of Clonmacnoise, Durrow, Glendalough, Inis Cealtra, Kells and Monasterboice also make the list.

The Minister will now submit this list to UNESCO for consideration as nominees to the World Heritage List.

Minister Gormely says he is satisfied the sites he has put forward meet the UNESCO World Heritage criteria in terms of integrity and authenticity.

He says this list encapsulates the rich heritage and culture of Ireland.
