Spanish police arrest two bomb suspects
Spanish police today arrested two suspected members of an Islamic extremist group who are believed to have had a role in the Casablanca bombings of 2003.
The two, a 43-year-old Moroccan with Belgian nationality and a 31-year-old Spaniard, were detained in Spain’s North African city enclave of Melilla, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.
The two, who were only identified by their first names, are suspected of being members of the Moroccan Islamic Combatant Group and of playing a role in the May 2003 terror bombings in Casablanca that killed 45 people, including 12 suicide bombers.
The detentions were ordered by leading Spanish investigative magistrate, Baltasar Garzon.
The ministry said investigations indicated the two men formed part of a radical international Islamic movement, providing logistical support for terrorist structures.
Police seized computer material and personal documents in raids on the men’s houses in Melilla.
