The Taoiseach Brian Cowen is due to travel to New York today for the latest UN discussions on climate change.
The summit, which gets underway tomorrow, has been arranged to discuss progress following last December's international climate change conference in Copenhagen.
Speaking yesterday, Mr Cowen said climate change was a clear example of the increasing need for international co-operation to face the challenges of the 21st century.
The Taoiseach is due to return to Ireland on Wednesday afternoon after attending the UN General Assembly that morning to hear an address by US President Barack Obama.
