Two teenage girls have been crushed to death as pupils at an Indonesian school fled from what they thought was a ghost.

More than 100 girls were reportedly reciting from the Koran when they heard a "ghostly wail".

The two girls were trampled as classmates ran down stairs at the Muslim boarding school in East Java.

One pupil is quoted as saying the woman's ghostly voice could be "heard from every direction".

Police are investigating the incident but say they can't prove something they cannot see.
