Villarreal joined Manchester United’s conquerors Benfica in the last 16 of the Champions League after beating Lille tonight.
Lille go into the UEFA Cup after their hopes of advancing in the premier competition were dashed by a 72nd-minute goal from Villarreal’s Antonio Guayre, which ensured the Spaniards finished top.
Udinese were five minutes from advancing, only for late goals from Santiago Ezquerro and Andres Iniesta to give Barcelona, who had already made sure of their place in the last 16, a 2-0 win.

Juventus made sure of top spot in Group A with a 3-1 win at Rapid Vienna.
Bayern Munich, who were top at kick-off, were held to a 1-1 draw at Club Brugge, Javier Portillo cancelling out Claudio Pizarro’s opener but Felix Magath’s men finish second.
