A passenger plane crashed while attempting to land in heavy rain at an airport on southern Thailand’s tourist island of Phuket today, possibly leaving up to 100 dead, an official said.

Deputy governor of Thailand’s Phuket island, Worapot Ratthaseema, told The Associated Press that as many as 100 were dead, based on assessments that as few as 20 passengers appeared to have made it out of the wreckage alive.

“I believe 90% or about 100 passengers are feared dead,” Worapot said, adding that the airport has been temporarily closed following the accident.
