Pakistani police are continuing to search today for kidnapped US journalist Daniel Pearl, who was apparently taken hostage by Islamic militants.

Mr Pearl, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, was abducted on January 23rd in Karachi while working to secure an interview with the founder of an obscure, militant Muslim group.

The group holding the reporter has vowed to execute him today unless the US Government releases the Pakistani men being held in a military base in Cuba after their arrest in Afghanistan.

A message from the group yesterday said: "We will give you one more day. If America will not meet our demands, we will kill Daniel. Then this cycle will continue and no American journalist could enter Pakistan."

US Secretary of State Colin Powell has ruled out bending to the group’s demands.
