British peacekeeper killed by landmine in Kosovo

British peacekeepers on patrol near a Kosovo village bordering Macedonia have struck a land mine, killing one soldier and injuring two others.

The incident occurred yesterday near the village of Krivenik, said Austrian Major Alex Jandesek, a spokesman for NATO-led peacekeepers in Kosovo, known as KFOR.

The two wounded soldiers are being treated at the US Army's hospital at Camp Bondsteel.

The condition of the two injured soldiers is not life-threatening, said a British Defence Ministry spokeswoman.

The Ministry of Defence is not releasing the names of the soldiers or their units pending notification of next of kin.

The incident marked the second time in less than a week that a peacekeeper attached to the NATO-led force died while on duty. On Wednesday, a Russian soldier was shot and killed in another part of Kosovo near the boundary area with Serbia, Yugoslavia's larger republic.

The village where the incident occurred was the scene of a mortar attack March 29 in which an Associated Press Television News journalist, British national Kerem Lawton, was killed. Macedonian forces and the rebels have denied responsibility in the attack, but peacekeepers are investigating.

Since the shelling, NATO-led peacekeepers have discovered several arms caches in the area.
