Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and broadcaster Maia Dunphy launched a national coffee morning event for Irish hospices on Thursday.

The pair "got brewing" at Government Buildings to remind everyone to host, attend or donate to a Bewley’s Big Coffee Morning Social for Hospice on September 21st.

“This is an event which rightly recognises the tireless, and often unseen, work undertaken by hospice staff and volunteers throughout Ireland,” said Mr Varadkar.

“It is an opportunity for all of us as individuals, and also for businesses, to recognise the huge contribution they make to families.

“None of us know if or when we will need hospice care, which provides comfort and dignity to thousands of families whose loved ones need end-of-life care or are dealing with life-limiting conditions.

"A special word of thanks to all those involved in this fundraiser, now entering its fourth decade, especially those who host coffee mornings.”

Broadcaster and presenter Maia Dunphy, a long-term supporter of hospices, said: “It’s great to be able to do these things in person once again. It's such an important fundraiser, and a fun one too.

“It’s such a simple and effective way to support Together for Hospice – and if you can’t host, just turn up at a coffee morning or donate.”

Bewley’s Big Coffee Morning Social for Hospice has raised over €43.2 million since 1992 and there is a €2 million fundraising target this year.

Together for Hospice, the national hospice movement, represents 26 hospice and specialist palliative home care providers supporting patients and their families.

Funds raised locally stay local and go back into each hospice to innovate, build new facilities, develop new services and deliver quality improvements and extra benefits for their patients and family members.

You can register now to host a coffee morning on September 21st – or on a date that suits you – at hospicecoffeemorning.ie or call 0818 995 996. If you cannot host or attend one, you can make a donation at hospicecoffeemorning.ie/donate
