Man Charged With Alleged Fatal Stabbing Of His Mother's Dog

A 27-year old Ennis man appeared in court charged in connection with the alleged fatal stabbing of his mother’s pet dog in July.

At Ennis District Court, the man - who can’t be named for legal reasons - faces a total of five charges concerning the alleged fatal stabbing of the dog, the alleged assault causing harm of his mother and the unlawful possession of knives at two locations in Ennis on July 11th last.

Sgt Louis Moloney told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has directed that the case is to be heard in the circuit court and a Book of Evidence will be required.

In the case, the man is charged with stabbing a dog at a location in Ennis on July 11th last leading to the dog having to be put down, contrary to Section 12 of the Animal Health and Welfare Act.

The man is also charged with assaulting his mother causing her harm contrary to Section 3 of the Non Fatal Offences against the Person Act on the same date at the same location in Ennis.

The man is also charged with while allegedly stabbing a dog on July 11th last in Ennis did produce a large knife in a manner to unlawfully intimidate another person and capable of causing a serious injury contrary to Section 11 of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act.

The man is also charged with at July 11th at Summerhill Veterinary Clinic, Summerhill, Ennis have a knife in his possession which had a blade which was sharply pointed, contrary to Section 1 and 7 of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act 1990.

The man is also charged with at July 11th at Summerhill Vet Clinic, Ennis did without lawful authority have with him in a public place a flick knife capable of causing injury or incapacitating another person, contrary to Section 9 of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act 1990.

In evidence of arrest, charge and caution, Garda Emmet Roche said that the accused made 'no reply’ after charge and caution before court on Wednesday morning.

Judge Alec Gabbett said that he was aware of the details of case from another court.

Solicitor, John Casey for the accused said that there was no bail application for his client and Judge Gabbett remanded the man in custody to re-appear before Ennis District Court on October 4th.

Judge Gabbett told the accused that the Book of Evidence will be ready in November “and there will be a trial before judge and jury in the circuit court".

Judge Gabbett granted legal aid in the case and directed that the accused receive psychiatric treatment while in custody following a request from Mr Casey.
