Latest: A major search operation is underway in west Cork for a fisherman who failed to return home last night.

The fisherman, Kodie Healy from Goleen, was fishing in the Dunmanus Bay area on his own and was due to return to shore at around 6pm yesterday evening.

However, the alarm was raised after 8pm last night by his family when it became clear that he had not returned.

He is from a local fishing family and is in his early 20s.

This morning, from first light, members of the Schull and Goleen Coastguard, the Castletownbere Lifeboat, Rescue 115 and the WB Yeats naval vessel have been spearheading a search of the area for the missing fisherman.

Local fishing boats have also joined in the search.

Update 9am: A major search operation for a missing fisherman has resumed in Cork this morning.

Gardaí have confirmed that a ship wreckage has since been discovered near the coastline in the Schull area.

The search is focused in Dummanus Bay off the coast of Schull, Co Cork after the fisherman, in his 20s, failed to return home and was reported missing at 8:30pm yesterday evening.

Overnight searches were conducted by the Shannon and Waterford based Coast Guard Helicopters, Castletownbere and Baltimore RNLI, Naval ship LE WB Yeats, and local fishing vessels with shoreline searches being conducted by Schull and Goleen Coast Guard units.

Volunteer lifeboat crews were requested by the Valentia Coast Guard Coordination Centre, who are coordinating the search, at 8:30pm yesterday.

The Castletownbere RNLI lifeboat had been at sea on its weekly training exercise under the command of Deputy Coxswain Dave Fenton and immediately proceeded to Dunmanus Bay.

Baltimore RNLI’s all-weather lifeboat, the naval vessel LE William Butler Yeats, and Rescue Helicopter 115 from Shannon, all combed Dunmanus Bay until the search was stood down at 2.30am.

The Castletownbere RNLI volunteers launched their lifeboat again this morning at 6:15am. Coxswain Fenton says the weather is westerly, south westerly with a force of 5 to 6 with a 2 to 3 metre swell.

Investigations are ongoing.
