Gardaí remained present at the property throughout Tuesday. The property was completely gutted in the fire.

Reliable sources said the property had been vacant for some time and that it had been used as a squat.

Three people inside the property at the time of last night’s fire were alerted to the blaze by a passer-by, reliable sources confirmed.

The property was sealed off by gardaí pending a forensic examination at the address.

Officers attached to the Garda technical unit were to conduct a forensic sweep of the two-story townhouse on Windmill Street, in order to try and determine the exact cause of the blaze.

Several units from Limerick City and County Fire and Rescue Service responded to the scene and put out the fire.

A Garda spokeswoman said: “Gardaí assisted the fire service at a house fire on Windmill Street, Limerick on Monday night 8th January, 2024 at approximately 9.30pm
, no persons were injured and the scene has been preserved.

“Investigations are ongoing.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Henry Street Garda Station on 061-212400.
