A renewed call has been made to formally recognise three forgotten Irish brothers who were "as big as the Kardashians" and who all have their own stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Owen, Matt and Tom Moore from Fordstown village in Co Meath starred in over 500 movies in the early 1900s. Owen married the famous silent screen actress Mary Pickford, before she divorced him to wed Douglas Fairbanks days later.

The Irish trio were household names across the US in the 1920s and all have their own stars on Hollywood Boulevard.

Remarkably, out of 13 Irish actors who are on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, five are linked to Co Meath.

Pierce Brosnan was born in Navan and Maureen O'Hara's father hailed from Kells, though she was born in Dublin.

However, apart from a small plaque in Fordstown erected over a decade ago, very few remember the rags-to-riches tale of the Moore brothers who left penniless from Co Meath, landing at Ellis Island in 1886.

A Fianna Fáil councillor has called on Meath County Council to construct a similar walk of fame in the county, to raise the profile of these artists and recognise others who have played an important role in the arts on an international front.

The walk would possibly be located at the Solstice Arts Centre in Navan, which is just yards from St Finians Terrace where Pierce Brosnan grew up.

"I believe we need to recognise and celebrate the fame and achievements of these five children of Meath," said Mike Bray.

"I am from Fordstown and we are very proud of the Moore family, but most people have never heard of them."

Award-winning historian Turtle Bunbury, who has documented the story of the Moore brothers, has lent his support to the walk of fame, saying, "I think it is a good idea.

"The Moores of Fordstown were extremely well-known across the USA back in the roaring 20s. They were right up there with the Hollywood elite in the Golden Age, starring alongside people like Mae West and Cary Grant and indeed, Mary Pickford or 'the girl with the curls' as she was known, was as famous as any of the Kardashians today," he said.

Local historians Stephen Ball and Kenny Timmons have carried out a lot of research and are hoping to compile a comprehensive book on the Moores.

The brothers made their movie debuts in 1908 when the Hollywood motion picture industry kicked off and it was here that Owen met Mary Pickford and got married in 1911.

However the marriage did not survive as Owen became jealous of Mary's meteoritic rise to fame and Mary filed for divorce, marrying Douglas Fairbanks days later.

His last film role was as a director in the 1937 classic 'A Star is Born,' before he died just two years later.

Older brother Tom starred in 186 pictures, frequently cast as the romantic lead in both the silent movies and the first 'talkies'. He died in 1955.

Matt followed his brothers to Hollywood and racked up 221 motion picture appearances, including starring opposite his ex-sister-in-law Mary Pickford in her second Oscar winning role – Coquette – as well as the 1916 classic, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
