Justice Minister says Attorney General 'has our full confidence'

The Justice Minister says Maire Whelan is an excellent Attorney General, and has her full confidence.

Maire Whelan came in for criticism in the Fennelly report over how she dealt with knowledge of widespread taping of phone calls by the gardaí.

Justice Fennelly raised concerns about the fact that Ms Whelan had not been in touch with the then Justice Minister Alan Shatter and Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan.

But Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald has nothing but praise for Ms Whelan:

"We have an excellent Attorney General, who has overseen probably the greatest amount of reforming legislation in the history of the State and we work very closely with her as a cabinet.

"She is a very competent and capable Attorney General and she has our full confidence," Ms Fitzgerald said.
