Munster captain Peter O'Mahony is a doubt for the province’s Heineken Cup quarter-final with Toulouse on Saturday.
The flanker took only a minor part in training today and it is unclear as to whether or not he will take his place in the side for the visit of the four-time champions. It is hoped he will resume full training on Thursday should he suffer no ill-effects from tomorrow’s session.
O'Mahony was a late withdrawal from the side that lost narrowly to Leinster at the Aviva stadium last weekend, with a recurrence of the hamstring injury he picked up against England in February flaring up again.
“We don’t know what the core problem with Peter is, it’s a hamstringy-ish thing,” head coach Rob Penney said on Saturday, “but it may be nerve-related. It’s one of those ones, obviously there were reports coming out of the Six Nations that he had that going on, that’s public knowledge, and he’s been fine but it just flared up so we were just being very cautious with him.”
Today, he seemed a little more optimistic, saying: “Peter O’ Mahony is on a managed work load at the start of the week. Hopefully he will have no repercussion tomorrow. He trained well today but not fully.”
Lock Donnacha Ryan looks certain to miss the game however as he continues to struggle with a foot injury picked up against Treviso in the Rabo Pro 12 clash at Thomond Park.
There’s better news for Munster with last weekend’s stand-in captain Damien Varley looking likely to be fit along with wing Keith Earls, both of whom are on “managed workloads” but expected to be fine for Saturday.
Toulouse ,meanwhile, have injury concerns of their own with back-row forwards Yannick Nyanga and Louis Picamoles struggling with ankle and pelvis issues respectively. Luke McAllister is also a major doubt for Guy Noves’s men.
