The Dunne-Martinez announcement was made before John Duddy's homecoming bout on last night's Hunky Dorys fight night bill at the National Stadium in Dublin.

Brian Peters, Dunne's manager and promoter, brought both Dunne and Martinez to the ring to confirm their match-up next month.

Ricky Hatton's promoter Dennis Hobson, together with Team Magee, have secured the promotional rights to the fight and are hoping to have Belfast's Brian Magee challenging Tony Oakley for the British light heavyweight title on the undercard.

Martinez will be a higher class of opponent for Dunne who has had two successful defences of his European crown since securing the belt last November with a points decision over Esham Pickering.

The 21-year-old Martinez, nicknamed 'La Sensacisn', is unbeaten in 16 pro fights with 13 of his victories by knockout.

The Spaniard is Dunne's number one challenger and currently tenth in the WBA rankings, one position behind the Irishman.

Dunne grabbed the 24th straight win of his pro career at the Point three weeks ago by outpointing Norway's Reidar Walstad.

Commenting on the Martinez fight, promoter Brian Peters said: "It's a fight that if Bernard wins will just confirm him as the best super bantamweight in Europe and then he can move on from this level."
